Protecting your connection amidst the holiday madness!
Setting Realistic Expectations
Most arguments and unspoken frustrations boil down to one thing, unmet expectations. We all have an image in our minds of how we think the holidays should go. Rarely does reality look exactly how we imagine it in our minds let alone whatever is playing in your partners mind as well. So, before the season is in full swing, set aside a moment to actually ask each other what's important for you this holiday. When deciding on this, remember to respect each other's traditions. Be open to compromise and consider either alternating or creating new traditions that feel special for both of you. The important thing is to agree on priorities and don't get hung up on perfectionism.
Divide and Conquer
Every holiday season comes with an increased financial demand and the never ending to do list. Finances are a common source of tension in general, add the increased spending from the holidays and it's a recipe for disaster. This is why it's so important to set a holiday budget together and stick to it. Be very clear about priorities for gift giving, travel, and events. Then you can create a list of tasks that are aligned with your budget. Once it's complete, consider each others strengths and preferences and work as a team to tackle your list.
Rest and Gratitude
No matter how well you plan, you’re bound to feel stressed at some point. Usually stress comes up when you’re focusing on the negative. The best way to help combat that is with gratitude. Make a daily ritual of sharing one thing you appreciate about each other or the season. Not only will it foster connection but it brings positivity to the forefront. Finally, don’t forget to rest. When you’re making that long to do list be sure to also schedule in some down time. Both individually and as a couple. We all need time to recharge so that we can put our best selves forward.
Lighting the spark
Now that you have your priorities in order, things are planned out, you are rested, and grateful… Let’s remember what it’s all about. The holidays are about LOVE, and your relationship should be at the top of that list. It’s not just about the kids or family, and friends. You need to have quality time with each other as well. Sprinkle in little things throughout the holiday season. Snuggle up in front of the TV and have a holiday movie marathon. Leave little love notes around the house for each other to find. Turn gift wrapping into a date night and dance around the Christmas Tree. Maybe even create a new tradition and do a couples photoshoot.
Turning that spark into a roaring fire
A couples photoshoot could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Whether it’s boudoir style or not, the point is to create something meaningful and romantic. These sessions are about capturing your unique connection in a way that feels authentic to you. Science shows that shared positive experiences strengthen emotional bonds, and the act of being close during a photoshoot naturally releases oxytocin, the “love hormone” which fosters feelings of intimacy and safety. Seeing yourselves through each other’s eyes can be transformative, boosting self confidence and deepening your connection. Your photos become more than just keepsakes. They’re tangible reminders of your spark, proven by studies to help couples feel closer and more committed every time they see them.
